The Story Behind the Keep Calm Slogan with Weekend Linky

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -

The original 1939 Keep Calm
and Carry On poster
Source: Wikipedia

I think we've all seen the Keep Calm and Carry On slogan and variations of it. I never knew that there was a story behind the original saying until my husband stumbled upon it earlier this week. I found the story so interesting that I thought to share it with you today. I went to Wikipedia to get the scoop. You can find the full story here.

Keep Calm and Carry On

Keep Calm and Carry On was a motivational poster produced by the British government in 1939 in preparation for the Second World War. ...The poster was hardly ever publicly displayed and was little known until a copy was rediscovered in 2000. It has since been re-issued by a number of private companies, and has been used as the decorative theme for a range of products.

It was thought that only two original copies survived until a collection of 20 was brought in to the Antiques Roadshow in 2012 by the daughter of an ex-Royal Observer Corps member.

Design and Production

The Keep Calm and Carry On poster was designed by the Ministry of Information during the period 27 June – 6 July 1939. It was produced as part of a series of three "Home Publicity" posters (the others read "Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution Will Bring Us Victory" and "Freedom Is in Peril. Defend It With All Your Might"). Each poster showed the slogan under a representation of a "Tudor Crown" (a symbol of the state). They were intended to be distributed to strengthen morale in the event of a wartime disaster, such as mass bombing of major cities using high explosives and poison gas, which was widely expected within hours of an outbreak of war.

Almost 2,500,000 copies of Keep Calm and Carry On were printed between 23 August 1939 and 3 September 1939 but the poster was not sanctioned for immediate public display. Copies of Keep Calm and Carry On were retained until April 1940, but stocks were then pulped as part of the wider Paper Salvage campaign. An October 1940 edition of the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Mercury records the poster being hung in a shop in Leeds.

Rediscovery and Commercialization

In 2000, Stuart Manley, co-owner with his wife Mary of Barter Books Ltd. in Alnwick, Northumberland, was sorting through a box of used books bought at auction when he uncovered one of the original "Keep Calm and Carry On" posters. The couple framed it and hung it up by the cash register; it attracted so much interest that Manley began to produce and sell copies. Other companies followed suit, and the design rapidly began to be used as the theme for a wide range of products.

Here are a few variations of the original slogan

Gerbs in the House: Jaida’s Here

Gerbs in the House:
Jaida's Here

About the Book:

Be Courageous. Laugh. Embrace Your Uniqueness. Spread Joy. This is the story about Jaida; a friendly little caterpillar with a powerful message. A surprise visit to Mocha and Petri’s dollhouse leads the three to an everlasting friendship. Each day is filled with a new memory, until the day that Jaida stops coming to visit. As Mocha and Petri begin to accept the loss of their friend, they soon learn that Jaida’s greatest lesson has yet to come. Gerbs in the House: Jaida’s Here is a friendly children’s story about love, life, loss and transformation, inspired by Jaida Cumberland.

In Memory of Jaida Cumberland 2003 - 2011

A portion of the proceeds from this book will be donated to Jaida's Challenge: www.jaidaschallenge.ca

My Review:

Amanda and I thoroughly enjoyed reading Gerbs in the House: Jaida’s Here. It's the second time we've had the pleasure of reviewing a Gerbs in the House book. We find the photographs super cute and the illustrations are bright and friendly. Amanda really liked Jaida the butterfly and she was interested to hear about Jaida Cumberland, the real girl behind the story.

In Jaida's Here, the story brings a message of hope amidst loss:
"Although your time with Jaida was short, hang onto the memories you have because they are special," Mocha said.

I highly recommend this book for girls ages 4 - 8.

Inspirational Quotes and a Weekend Linky

Welcome to my weekend blog hop -
Make My Saturday Sweet #118!

My blog is best viewed in Google Chrome

In a short couple of weeks, I turn 40. I was hoping that our house would have sold and that there would be new things in store for us. I often feel stuck and isolated in our small town here in South Africa, but I trust the direction of my life in the Lord's hands.

Thankfully, our kids are well adjusted and happy and that's probably why we are still here. They don't feel the need to move, but they are open to the idea, probably for my sake. If it wasn't for my blogs, I'd be frustrated, because I have a lot of drive to be using my gifts and talents. My blogs are certainly a creative outlet for me.

I chose these inspirational quotes because they are meaningful to me. I think they will bless you too. I've also added related posts from the past with more great quotes below. If something touches your heart, feel free to pin it to your Pinterest boards.

Fearless Joe Dearborne

Fearless Joe Dearborne
and a $25 Giveaway

Fearless Joe Dearborne by Lisa Whitney Mitchell

I have not asked for a review copy of this book, but it certainly looks like a great read. I hope you find the reviews below from those who have read it helpful.

About the Book

Title: Fearless Joe Dearborne | Author: Lisa Whitney Mitchell | Publication Date: July 11, 2014 | Publisher: Independent | Pages: 198 | Recommended Ages: 8+

Summary: Some might say he’s courageous, while others would say he’s daring, maybe even a little crazy. But when Joe Dearborne risked his life and ran into a burning building to save a puppy, the local newspaper referred to him as “fearless”—and that’s a pretty big title for a sixth-grader to live up to.

Plus, Joe already has plenty else to worry about. After other daring feats in the past, Joe promised his father he wouldn’t do anything dangerous again, and, alas, he’s just broken that promise.

But whatever trouble he expects to get into with his father, and despite the dangers he’s triumphed over in the past, nothing could prepare Joe for what he’s about to encounter when a cold, bitterness creeps into his home.

A mysterious and peculiar woman named Mrs. Chill has just been hired to care for Joe while his father is away on business. In no time, however, Joe discovers that she’s up to more than cooking and cleaning, and she has plans to destroy his family. Joe’s effort to save them results in perilous, sometimes humorous, encounters, and leads him on a journey through the threatening wilderness where he faces his greatest challenge yet.

The Buzz About the Book

Be sure to check out the Book Review Blitz Wrap-Up for Fearless Joe Dearborne where you can read excerpts from the 40+ reviews generated through the blitz. Here are some of the things reviewers had to say about Fearless Joe Dearborne:

Leigh Shearin: "Children from age 8-12 should love this story. It is full of suspense and excitement, but also provides well-disguised learning opportunities, which should please parents as well. I simply can't say enough good things about this wonderful debut novel. Lisa Whitney Mitchell has come out fearlessly, treating us all to what could become an iconic novel!"
Heart of a Philanthropist: "This reader was impressed with how many subplots are in Fearless Joe Dearborne. It is a short easy read. The book can easily be finished in just a few reading sessions. If you are looking for a good mystery embedded with humor, this book is for you! Recommended for 9-13 year old readers."
Identity Discovery: "I thought this was a fantastic book. Each chapter starts with a word being defined and then the word is used within the chapter. I absolutely love this aspect. It not only is an entertaining story, but it helps kids to learn new words and how to use them. The character development really showed Joe's transformation. I loved it."
Christy's Cozy Corners: "There is so much to love about this book...The storyline, setting, characters and pacing make this a great book for your kids to read alone or with you. I know I enjoyed it, so I recommend reading it with your child. I highly recommend it!"
1:25 am Reviews: "I read this entire book in one sitting. I just couldn't bear to put it down because there was never a dull moment!!"
BeachBoundBooks: "This is such a fantastic story. There is so much going on to keep children entertained throughout the book... The story teaches children about character and believing in yourself."
Bookworm for Kids: "Of course, I'm always a fan of shorter adventures. The 135 pages invites even hesitant readers to take a peek and get swept away in the fun. In other words, I can recommend this to boys and girls who love adventure, a few chills and tons of fun thrown in."
Sunshine, Bubbles and Books: "One of the strongest points of this book is how it shows the difference between being brave and being fearless. Often books portray recklessness as a positive trait... as a mother, I love that this paints it in a more realistic light. That there are consequences to actions."
A Leisure Moment: "This story is filled with adventure and mystery which can be inferred through the book cover... The attention to detail, along with the description of events really creates an atmosphere of a great story that upper elementary/middle level students will truly enjoy!"
Brooke Blogs: "I enjoyed the story as much as my 12 year old daughter did. This was a quick read and a page turner that we didn't want to put down until we were finished."

Maisy and the Missing Mice

Sneak Peek

My Review

Amanda loves it when I read the Maisy Mysteries to her. This is the second book in the series and another great mystery. It starts out a bit slow, but once Maisy goes into her detective mode, Amanda gets thrills of excitement that makes her want to hear more.

There are plenty of big words for young readers that helps them to build their vocabulary. I don't explain every new word to Amanda, but she now knows what a "marauder" is. The author takes the time to explain that particular word in the book and does it quite nicely.

I highly recommend this story to children ages 6 - 11.

The Buzz About Book One

"Maisy and the Missing Mice is a fun chapter book featuring a smart and sassy tween girl as the title character; a solid and interesting plot featuring age-appropriate intrigue and suspense; and some terrific writing that carries the reader on a journey as a detective uncovering clues and solving the mystery of who stole the missing mice. I highly recommend this book as a read aloud book for children between the ages of 6 and 10 or for independent readers between the ages of 7 and 12 who love to read mysteries." ~ Mother Daughter Book Reviews

"Woodrum certainly knows her target audience and does a very nice job with the character development of Maisy. This is an incredibly kid-friendly story that makes a great introduction to the genre of mystery for newly independent readers. It's a quick page turning read that encourages kids to think outside of the box." ~ The Children's Book Review

"My name is Kat. I am 9 years old. I would rate this a five because I like everything about it, the mystery the most. It was fun to read. My favorite part was the mystery and the end. I love this book so much. I think other kids would love it too because it has mystery and most kids would like mystery books. Most mystery books have a good mystery. I would love to read the whole series." ~ 5 Star Review, Heather A., Amazon
